The word “robot” comes from the Czech word robota, meaning forced labor.
When it first appeared in a 1920 play, robots were science fiction. A century later, Toyota is planning factories where hundreds of thousands of robots could become part of everyday manufacturing.
This week in tech:
Claude just got 40% cheaper.
Toyota is betting $6.4B on robots.
Search engines are learning to talk back.

Opus 5.5 Cuts the Cost
Anthropic introduced Claude Opus 5.5, the first model in its Claude 5.5 family. The company says it reaches Claude Fable 5.1-level performance on most work while costing 40% less to run than Opus 5.
The model also generates output 30% faster, with lower token and cache costs. For teams running long coding and agentic workloads, the change is less about another model launch and more about lower cost per task. Read more
Apple Takes AI Local
Apple is positioning its new Mac mini and Mac Studio as lower-cost machines for running AI locally, putting pressure on the cloud-heavy approach associated with Microsoft and Nvidia.
The pitch is simple: businesses can run demanding AI workloads on their own hardware instead of paying for every inference in a cloud data center. That makes AI cost per task a hardware problem as much as a model problem. Read more
GPT-6 Gets Two New Modes
OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna for ChatGPT Work and Codex, with both models designed around different balances of capability, speed and cost. They are rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users.
Sol targets complex coding and agentic work, while Luna is aimed at faster, higher-volume tasks. OpenAI is also lowering token costs compared with its GPT-5.6 predecessors, making the models easier to use at scale. Read more
Toyota Plans 400,000 Robots
Toyota estimates its factory automation push could require around 400,000 robots and about ¥1 trillion ($6.4 billion) annually from 2028. The figure includes both humanoid and conventional robots.
The plan covers industrial robots, automated logistics and human-robot collaboration across Toyota, its group companies and major suppliers. Robotics is moving from factory experiments toward a large infrastructure budget. Read more
